Otosclerosis refers to the stiffening of the middle ear bones (auditory ossicles) which is often due to old age. Otosclerosis is proven to play some role in causing head noises. There are three tiny bones (auditory ossicles) in the tympanic cavity that vibrates when exposed to sound waves, namely: malleus, incus, as well as the stapes. When these ossicles have been vibrating too long they grow weary, the ear muscles shrink, thus reducing the hearing ability or causing tinnitus.
