The effect dust mites have on Sinusitis.

Dust mites can cause chaos to the mucus membranes, especially when a person is asleep because the cilia are at rest. Dust mites are allergens together with animal dander, pollen, molds and cockroaches cause the immune system to overreact. Allergens are substances that cause an allergic reaction. Allergens enter through the nose into the sinuses which may cause irritation to the sinuses.

What is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis is an infection or inflammation of the sinuses. Sinuses are cavities in the skull that helps purify the air we breathe, give resonance to the voice and lighten the skull. There are four pairs of paranasal sinuses - the Ethmoid, Sphenoid, Frontal and Maxillary sinuses, and sinusitis is a condition that affects the paranasal sinuses.

Where do dust mites live?

Dust mites are microscopic eight-legged insects that live in warm, damp areas of the home. 99% of homes contain dust mites because dust seems to be everywhere. They are found in high masses on mattresses, bedding, clothes, carpets and upholstered furniture. Although dust mites cannot see, they feast on the scales of skin that we naturally shed from our body while sleeping or relaxing in your home. At night our heads are nestled in pillows and blankets, the dust mites have easy access to our airways and sinuses.

Symptoms of allergies to dust mite

  • Sneezing
  • Coughing
  • Itchy and runny eyes
  • Nasal congestion
  • Wheezing
  • Itchy nose
  • Dry, itchy skin

In many cases, people do not recognize these symptoms as a reaction to dust mite allergies. If you have some of these symptoms it is advisable to have a skin test done by an allergist to determine if you have allergies.

Tips on how to control dust mites

  • Wash all sheets, blankets, and pillow cases in hot water over 130 degrees for more than 30 minutes at least once a week
  • Remove unnecessary objects from the walls and ceilings in your bedroom such as heavy curtains and wall-to-wall carpeting which are huge dust-collectors
  • Place dust mite resistant encasement around the mattress and pillows
  • Keep stuffed animals to a minimum
  • Substitute curtains with window blinds in bedrooms that can be wiped on a regular basis
  • Remove carpets in your home if possible, and replace them with tiles or hardwood floors.
  • Install air filters in your home
  • Keep your house as clean and dry as possible by dusting furnishings regularly

Treatment for dust mite allergy symptoms

Conventional doctors will prescribe steroid nasal sprays, antibiotics and corticosteroid nasal spray for the inflammation caused by an allergy reaction. To keep the nasal and sinus passages from becoming inflamed the above medications must be taken every day, which may worsen the inflammation.
