Stomatitis

Stomatitis is an inflammation, redness or swelling of the mucus membranes lining different areas in the mouth. These areas include:

1. Gums
2. Cheeks
3. Tongue
4. Lips
5. Roof or floor of the mouth
6. Throat

In severe cases, bleeding of these mucus membranes may occur.

Causes of Stomatitis

1. Mouth burns from hot foods
2. Poor hygiene
3. Incorrect dentures
4. Medications
5. A lack of Vitamin B12 or folic acid in one’s diet
6. Infections
7. Braces
8. Allergic reactions
9. Biting of the cheeks
10. Chronic mouth breathing
11. Herpetic infection - this type of infection is highly contagious, and steps should be taken to prevent the spread of this condition.

Treatment for Stomatitis

1. Good hygiene
2. Using a soft bristled toothbrush
3. Medication to treat infection in the mouth
4. Patients who wear dentures should visit the dentist on a regular basis

Avoid sharp edged foods such as:

1. Tacos
2. Potato chips
3. Hard sweets

Other products that should be avoided:

• Alcohol
• Tobacco
