Beware, the effects of the “Scam” Pi or Po!

Allergies are one of the most common conditions affecting individuals worldwide and is due to the bodies over sensitivity to non-dangerous or non-harmful items.

Scam-Pi or Po or as they are normally referred to, Scampi or Scampo are variations of shellfish which, as delicious as these are can also cause numerous unwanted allergic reaction in individuals. These reactions can range from mild or subtle to near death experiences.

Mild reactions include:

• Mild skin irritation
• Itchy and red, watering eyes
• Rhinitis or a runny nose

More severe reactions:

• Swelling of the tongue, lips and face
• The closing of airways leading to anaphylaxis and possible death

A combination “Scam” reaction can also occur which is termed exercise-induced anaphylaxis. During this condition one experiences allergies to shellfish during a period of excise or when one exercises directly after eating the shellfish.

What exactly causes this allergic reaction?

The reaction is said to come from a protein that is found in many shellfish called tropomyosin and can also cause allergies to dust mites, cockroaches, common insects and even the more sedate garden snail.

In severe reactions, it is recommended that the individual carry around an epi-pen or epinephrine auto-injector just in case an allergic reaction occurs.

So beware the dreaded “Scam” Pi or Po as these little creatures can pack quite a punch on certain occasions and be sure to have your allergic medication close at hand.
