Post Nasal Drip and Nausea

Post nasal drip is when too much mucus accumulates at the back of the throat. It can cause chronic coughing, a sore throat and even nausea. Dealing with these symptoms can be difficult, although there are some solutions that can make post nasal drip go away, relieve nausea and make you feel better.
What Causes Post Nasal Drip?

There are several reasons why post nasal drip occurs. It can be the body’s response to a cold, a sinus infection, food allergy and even pregnancy. Basically, when you are sick or congested, mucus flow is interrupted or blocked. The body responds by increasing mucus to remove the blockage. This is normal and simply the body’s attempt to fight off an infection or get rid of an irritant (as in the case of allergies). The extra mucus gets infected and has nowhere else to go but to drain down the back of the throat. Post nasal drip causes coughing, a sore throat and in many cases, nausea. Particularly in the early morning before you have had a chance to eat, nausea develops as a result of the extra mucus ending up in the stomach.

It is important to remember that nausea in itself is not an illness, but instead, a response to something else- in this case, post nasal drip. While there are several ways to relieve nausea, it is recommended that you discuss these options with your doctor as some methods will only agitate the post nasal drip further.
Ask any pregnant woman how to relieve nausea and she will most likely have an excellent answer. Unfortunately, post nasal drip is quite common during pregnancy as is nausea. Ginger is a terrific, natural remedy. Try a small bit at first, either through ginger flavored soda (flat of course), ginger candy or flavored teas.
Anti-nausea medications have been shown to offer some relief as well. However, be sure to ask your doctor to prescribe something for you as over the counter medications tend not to be as effective. Read the instructions carefully and follow them- often taking food with these medications makes them ineffective or vice versa. Be conscientious of specific directions. In addition, if you are taking antihistamines or decongestants for your post nasal drip, be sure to consult with your physician before taking other medications.
For another, on the spot trick that may help relieve nausea resulting from post nasal drip, try to eat a few plain crackers. In many cases, just a bit of food can relieve the irritating mucus feeling in the throat as well as curb nausea. However, be careful not to eat too many. The rule is two or three maximum. If you eat more than that, you will have the opposite reaction and actually feel worse.
Avoid milk and dairy products which will increase mucus production and make digestion more difficult. The proteins and fats in milk actually create more mucus and are hasher on the stomach. Try to drink room temperature juice or clear liquids. Flat soda is okay, however, it must be flat because the carbonation contains acids that will irritate the stomach even more.
Post nasal drip with nausea is a common problem for many people. While there are treatments available to decrease symptoms, consider discussing your particular case with your family doctor. Avoid milk and dairy products, have a few crackers with some ginger ale and try to relax.
