Headaches can be a minor inconvenience
|

|
Over a lifetime, only one percent of the population escapes headaches all together. But for most people, headaches are a relatively minor aggravation, usually relieved by a quick nap or an over-the-counter medication. But some 45 million Americans complain of chronic headaches, and for at least half of them, the problem is serious enough to interfere with their daily lives.
The most common type of headache is the tension headache, experienced by up to 90 percent of the adult population. It produces a dull, achy pain that feels like pressure is being applied to the head or neck. The pain often is triggered by stress, depression or anxiety, which causes the muscles of the neck, face and scalp to contract. Poor physical posture also can bring on a tension headache. The pain generally is mild to moderate and disappears when the stress is relieved. This type of headache occurs mostly in women over the age of 20.
Cluster headaches affect about one million Americans, usually striking several times in rapid succession over weeks or even months. They often begin as a minor pain around one eye that rapidly increases in intensity. Other symptoms may include nasal congestion, drooping eyelids and irritated and watery eyes on the side of the pain. Cluster headaches can strike at any age, but usually start after the age of 20 and mainly affect men.
Sinus headaches are characterized by constant pain and tenderness over the affected sinus area. Their symptoms include a deep, dull ache that worsens with movement of the head or straining. Sinus headaches are very common, reportedly experienced by four out of 10 adults in the United States.
Migraine headaches, which affect some 28 million Americans every year, usually cause severe pain on one or both sides of the head. They may be accompanied by nausea and vomiting, light sensitivity, distorted vision, flu-like achiness, sweating and dizziness. Migraines may last from a few hours to days, and may recur several times in a week. The attacks can be triggered by eating certain foods, too much or too little sleep, female hormones, stress, weather and temperature changes or high altitude. Many migraine sufferers often have a family history of the condition.
