Can conventional medication cause post nasal drip?

A process of the body, that we are completely unaware of, is the dripping down of mucus into the throat. It is a regular process of the body to traps foreign particles in the nasal mucus. We are not aware of this process under normal circumstances, but only when we experience the excess secretion of mucus, do we further investigate the condition, that results into Post Nasal Drip.

This situation of the dripping of mucus into the throat is called Post Nasal Drip. There are various reasons that may cause this uncomfortable situation. Some of the facts that cause PND include medications for blood pressure, birth control and pregnancy.

Most people often consume medicines without consulting a doctor. Such medicines may disturb the hormonal system. Sometimes the medicine that a doctor would prescribe to control blood pressure, child birth, or manage pregnancy, disturbs the hormonal system. When the hormonal system is disturbed in such a manner it affects the nasal mucosa resulting in enhanced secretion of mucus.

Excess mucus gets accumulated in the back of the nose and starts dripping down into the throat causing the following problems:

  • Constant urge to clear your throat – When the throat is filled with mucus the patient needs to empty it. In fact, the patient feels a constant urge to clear the throat to get rid of the mucus. This mucus can be yellow or light green in color.

  • Constant urge to blow your nose – In cases of nasal blockage or obstruction, the person feels an urge to blow their nose to clear it out.

  • Runny nose – When mucus is watery the nose starts dripping this mucus into the back of the throat. Nobody likes to keep a packet of tissue with him or her all the time, but Post Nasal Drip makes the person feel helpless.

  • Sore throat – Swelling becomes common due to the accumulation of mucus in the throat. Swelling can painful to bear. Due to the pain of the throat, a person cannot clear the mucus out properly resulting in more mucus thus making the condition more severe.

  • Acid Reflux – Mucus consistently drips down into stomach from the throat where acids are released to break the excessive mucus for its easy path out from the body. When there is an increase in mucus, the stomach releases extra acid, which causes acid reflux. This causes a painful throat, acid reflux and runny nose all in one.
  • Cough – A person suffering from Post Nasal Drip can have a cough that causes the voice to sound hoarse. Moreover, due to the persistent cough the person becomes restless due to a lack of sleep.

  • Bad breath – Relationships tend to suffer when one partner experiences bad breath. The sufferer often needs to keep their hand over their mouth when speaking. This results in a lack of confidence and poor self-esteem, which isolates the sufferer.

The problems listed above occur due to post nasal drip, which may be a resultant due to medicines that we take. It is always advisable to take medicines under the instruction of a General practitioner, pharmacist etc., and medicines should be taken under the correct guidelines and with the utmost care.
