The conditions that can cause Post Nasal Drip

Nasal mucosa releases a quart of mucus everyday under regular healthy circumstances. This regular secretion of mucus helps in the following manners:
- When we inhale, the mucus within the sinuses humidifies the air
- Keeps the nose and throat moist
- Traps foreign bodies like dust, smoke, etc. and stops these particles from entering into the lungs
- Helps reduce infections by trapping viruses and bacteria
These are the benefits of mucus, but when mucus secretion is increased then it results in post nasal drip. Excess mucus then accumulates in the sinuses and drips down the back of the throat.
Though, there are many causes, one of the major causes of post nasal drip is nasal irritants. Irritants cause the nasal lining to be aggravated and inflamed. Excessive nasal irritants like dust and pollen can cause the body to increase its mucus production in order to flush out these irritants.
Due to inflammation of the nasal lining, it can become difficult to blow your nose properly, which then causes the excess mucus to accumulate at the back of the nose. When excess mucus is accumulated at the back of the nose, it starts dripping down the back of the throat which results in coughing to clear the excess mucus.
Below is a list of some of the other causes of post nasal drip:
- Colds and flu’s – During a cold or flu the secretion of mucus is increased. This excess secretion of mucus may cause excessive clearing of the throat and blowing of the nose.
- Dry air – On hot days, dry air causes the mucus to become dry or thick which blocks the nasal passages. This thick mucus then accumulates in the sinuses and drains down the back of the throat.
- Allergic reactions – Allergies may result in a running nose, sore throat and watery eyes. During an allergic attack there is an increase in the production of mucus and an inflammatory response to allergens. This inflammatory response causes the mucus lining to become inflamed, trapping mucus in the cavities causing excess mucus to flow down the back of the throat.
- Medication – Medicinal side-effects can also result into excessive secretion of mucus. Medicines taken to treat blood pressure, birth-control and during pregnancy are found to cause post nasal drip.
These are the reasons that cause post nasal drip. Other reasons may include cold temperature, spicy food, alcohol, cigarette, upper respiratory infection, hormonal changes in the body, chemical fumes, pollution, and blockage / obstruction in the nasal package.
