Allergies and Post Nasal Drip

Everyone loves spring flowers and freshly cut grass right? Well, not exactly. For millions of allergy suffers, these images evoke feelings of misery accompanied by sneezing, an itchy, runny nose and in some cases, a nagging cough. Suffering with allergies is certainly no fun; however, there are treatments that can make even the worst case much less distracting. In fact, life with allergies does not have to be uncomfortable, but can be every bit as enjoyable as life without allergies.
What are Allergies?
|
 |
|
Technically, allergies are diseases of the immune system that create an overreaction to substances called “allergens”. Allergies are often classified by a specific trigger or during a time of year when they are most prevalent. For instance, there are food allergies, skin allergies, fungal allergies and springtime allergies.
An allergen is a substance that triggers an allergic reaction. Basically, when you breathe in an allergen, nasal tissue becomes irritated and inflamed. The trigger releases inflammatory mediators that cause itching, swelling and mucus production. Allergens can be as obvious as a certain type of food, such as seafood or as innocent as pollen spread by the wind.
Allergies Cause Post Nasal Drip

|
In some cases, in addition to the watery eyes and sneezing, allergies can lead to post nasal drip, which is mucus draining down the back of your throat. Sometimes these combined symptoms are the result of allergic rhinitis, or as it is more commonly known, hay fever. Hay Fever is basically an allergic inflammation of the nasal airways resulting from inhalation of an allergen such as pollen or dust. In addition, symptoms can be classified as mild, moderate or severe.
There are two types of allergic rhinitis:
- Seasonal, which occurs during the pollen season
- Perennial, which occurs throughout the year
When hay fever and allergies cause post nasal drip it is known as allergic post nasal drip.
Symptoms of Allergic Post Nasal Drip

|
Typically, allergic post nasal drip sufferers experience sneezing, nasal congestion, coughing, a runny, itchy nose and mucus at the back of the throat. It is the addition of post nasal drip that adds the feeling of needing to clear the throat constantly, which often leads to a sore throat. As a result of excess mucus in the throat, often a chronic cough develops, which is worse at night. Unfortunately, throat hoarseness is not uncommon as your throat is constantly irritated.
Treatment

|
There are several ways to treat allergic post nasal drip. Perhaps the most obvious choice is to take proactive steps to prevent the condition by avoiding the allergen that creates the reaction in the first place. While this may sound good in theory, it is nearly impossible. However, it is possible to change the filter in your home heater or air conditioner, which may prevent some allergens from entering your home. It is also a good idea to install a humidifier in your home to moisten, clean and circulate air.
Antihistamines
Antihistamines offer some relief by blocking the action of allergic mediators. However, be careful with some antihistamines as they may have undesirable side effects, such as drowsiness.
Steroids
Steroids are effective at reducing nasal inflammation, although relief tends to be short lived. Steroids can also have unwanted side effects however; there are several over the counter steroidal nasal sprays which are safe for short term use.
Decongestants
One of the more common decongestants, pseudoephedrine is used in addition to antihistamines when nasal congestion is present.
