Q. What is post nasal drip?
A. Post nasal drip occurs when the nasal membranes produce excessive nasal discharge, i.e. mucus. This will happen when flu or cold viruses invade the body's defenses, causing the mucus membranes in the nostril and sinus cavities to become irritated and produce more mucus. The mucus's normal functions include lubricating and cleansing nasal membranes, moistening the air we inhale through our nostrils and trapping and removing foreign matter that may get stuck in the mucus during inhalation.
Normally this mucus is swallowed; however any excess causes the mucus to run posterity down the back of the throat resulting in the throat become swollen and sore. The mucus secretion may eventually get thicker and causes one to experience thick or even colored discharge.
If this excess nasal discharge is colored i.e. green, yellow, milky or even black, you may have a sinus infection.
One should try drinking more liquids, such as water or event hot tea's, to try and get the mucus to flow quicker.
