A. A small tube called the Eustachian tube connects the middle ear canal to the sinus cavity. This tube is not normally open and will only open upon swallowing or when blowing ones nose to ensure equalization of air and allow mucus to drain from the ear into the sinus cavities and unconsciously down the back of the throat.
When ones blows his/her nose the Eustachian tube is forced open causing an increase in air flow to the middle ear. To ensure ones eardrum does not burst, the increase air will need to seep out around the eardrum or tympanic membrane. It is these events that results in one experiencing a “pooping sensation” when either swallowing or blowing ones nose. |

A. Under normal circumstances blood flows to one side of the nasal cavity, engorging the tissues and after a few hours swops sides and transports blood to the opposite nasal cavity causing swelling in this area. This process goes on continuously; unnoticed.
It is only when one develops sinusitis or a sinus condition whereby the tissues become excessively swollen due to a bacterial infection or irritation that one becomes aware of the nasal cycle as normal swelling in these areas is compounded with swelling from a sinus condition.
This phenomenon is known as the nasal cycle and occurs naturally throughout the day. Some have speculated that the reason why the body performs this cycle is to ensure sufficient blood rich oxygen reaches the nasal cavities thereby ensuring the effective production of mucus is maintained. |
